I’m passionate about understanding the experiences of minority groups that are oft-neglected in research. I’m currently conducting a study on the impact of faith on the mental health and coping of Muslim women experiencing infertility. Although infertility is one of the most distressing issues affecting millions of Muslim couples worldwide every year, their experiences have scarcely been studied. One of the challenges I have had to overcome is not only reaching a minority population that is often difficult to engage in research, but encouraging them to share information about the deeply sensitive topic of infertility. I made this video in hopes of encouraging more women to participate in my study. The video went viral; and in one month it was viewed over 67,000 times, and led to the recruitment of almost 1,500 participants and over 3,000 Likes on the project’s Facebook page. This extraordinary response inspired me to start a crowdfunding campaign to expand research on this topic and establish a national infertility support group for Muslim women.
